The death of South Africa - By Allister Sparks

Read this and weep - The death of South Africa.

Some interesting facts about Welkom, which South Africans were possibly not aware of.

How sad to read - Strange that the situation does not seem to be reflected in mining reports and the stock market in SA - or is it ?
Last Sunday's papers covered the Oppenheimer’s sale of all their family's de Beers for  $5.2 billion to Anglo American. Nicky says it was a tough decision.
----------------
The death of South Africa’s mines is the death of South Africa By Mike Smith 20th of September 2011
In many respects the booming of South Africa’s mining industry and its current decay under the ANC’s BEE system is a microcosm of the booming of the Republic of South Africa under Apartheid and its decay under the ANC Marxist terrorist regime.

During the first half of the 20th century, gold was discovered on several farms south of the Free State town of Odendaalsrus. After the Second World War, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer and his Anglo American Corporation, the progenitor of Anglo Gold bought up all the prospecting rights in the area and decided to mine the richest gold find in the history of South Africa.

Prices of property in Odendaalsrus skyrocketed so Sir Ernest Oppenheimer decided that he would build his own town for his miners instead of paying the exorbitant prices in Odendaalsrus.

He drove 20km south and climbed a hill called Koppie-alleen (Hill alone) and looked down on the plains where his mines would be and decided to build a town from scratch called Welkom, named after the farm where the gold was first discovered.

The people of Odendaalsrus were upset and took him to court objecting to the new town. Ernest Oppenheimer’s lawyer was Abram (Bram) Fischer, an Afrikaner Communist and Anti-Apartheid activist that would later defend Nelson Mandela at the Rivonia trial.

Fischer was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University and travelled to the Soviet Union in 1932. He was also later awarded the Lenin Peace Prize (1966) the Soviet equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize was normally awarded to prominent Communists who were not Soviet citizens.

Fischer, incidentally, was married to Molly Krige, the niece of liberal Boer General Jan Smuts. She was also a staunch Communist.Nevertheless, in 1947 the Provincial Council issued Oppenheimer with the birth certificate of the town of Welkom.
In his mind Oppenheimer envisioned a beautiful garden city with broad streets. He commissioned the design of Welkom to leading town planner William Backhouse and landscape gardener Joane Prim. For Backhouse the design of a town from scratch was a dream came true. Space was not a problem on the Free State plains, so he designed the streets broad with no traffic lights, only roundabouts, to keep the traffic flowing and no high-rise buildings. In the centre of Town he wanted a Roman Forum with a square where town folk could gather. It was surrounded by a horseshoe shaped road of 75metres wide, known affectionately by the town people as the 'Hoefie' short for the Afrikaans word 'hoefyster' meaning horseshoe.

Sports clubs, golf clubs, Olympic swimming pools, cinemas, theatres, hospitals, parks, schools, a technical college and an airport was built all with the riches of the gold below the soil. The town attracted people from all over South Africa. Money was flowing, salaries were high. By the 1970's Anglo Gold was operating six massive mines with 22 deep level shafts in which 122,000 people worked. The mines of Welkom were producing 35% of South Africa's gold, which in turn was producing 75% of the world's gold. Everyone was driving a new car at least every year. They would say that when the ashtray was full, it was time to buy a new car. The 'hoefie' gave rise to the hot-rod culture of Welkom where young men would drive around at night showing off their new Ford Cortina’s with eagles painted on the bonnets and flames on the sides, fur on the dashboard and plastic oranges on the radio antennae. This culture also gave rise to the building of a Grand Prix racing track at Welkom. Times were good for blue collar whites.

Even in the nearby black township of Thabong and the coloured township of Bronville, the living standards were very high.

But then the ANC took over in 1994, mostly with the help of the Oppenheimer’s and J.P. Morgan who founded Anglo American Corporation in 1917. Hardly have the ANC communists taken over or they wanted not only a cut of the pie from the mining industry, but the whole thing.

Black Economic Empowerment was introduced and mines had to give away half of their assets to black ANC members. For Anglo American Corporation the writing was on the wall and before they could lose everything, they merged with Minorco in 1999 and moved their assets to London. In the last 10-15 years more than 100,000 jobs have been lost in Welkom. The skip wheels of the mines are not turning anymore and the noise of the mines as well as the hot-rods have fallen silent. The ziggurat-like walls of the slime dams next to the R73 road is the last remnants of a once thriving mining industry. Today, the mines are in the hands of BEE companies and being plundered for scrap metal. The municipality of Matjabeng is run by the ANC. In June 2011 it came into prominence as one of the worst examples of ANC corruption and misrule. How a small town blew R2bn on dodgy deals

Most of the whites have left Welkom. Blacks make up 90% of the population and whites 8%. To say that the town is a shadow of its former self is an overstatement. The decay is obvious everywhere and it is fast becoming a ghost town. 1500 staff houses at the mines are standing empty. Even churches have closed their doors. The remaining whites in the area, mostly farmers are struggling under stock theft and brutal farm attacks, tortures and murders .

Elsewhere it is not going any better. The Aurora mine at Grootvlei, which is owned by the Zuma and Mandela families and at one stage employed 5000 workers now have less than 200. Aurora is now a ghost town. On the 8th of May 2011 in a Carte Blanche TV show, it was revealed that Cosatu calls the owners of Aurora (Zuma and Mandela family members).  Super exploiters!!

If there is an abyss of desperation these men at the hostels are in it. At Grootvlei, near Springs, the water and electricity has been cut, the toilets are a shock. On good days they have hot food. Two hours drive to the west is the Orkney mine in Klerksdorp. There is an inescapable feeling of sadness here. Cooking pots are empty here too. Ntsani Mohapi has been on the mine since the mid 70s, he should be in line for a pension but that is all gone now. "There are people who are crying, there are people who are dying because we deal with people who are lying. As things stand hundreds of miners are still in limbo; millions are outstanding in salaries. Wives have left husbands, children have dropped out of school, people have been blacklisted.

They can't even claim UIF. The allegations against Aurora's directors are damning: since they took over the Pamodzi mines in 2009, which were fully operational at the time, they have been accused of not paying salaries, making endless broken promises, misappropriating UIF and pension fund money and stripping assets of mines they haven't paid for. Source Carte Blanche The BBC has extensively reported on how the Zuma (JZ's nephew) and Mandela (Nelson's grandson) families exploit their workers and treat them worse than dogs. While the Zuma and Mandela family members grow rich and fat, they do not pay their starving workers, which effectively makes them slave owners. Is this the 'Freedom' Mandela and Zuma spoke about and fought for? They were not Freedom Fighters. They were not fighting for the Freedom of the people, rather for the enslavement of the people under a communist yoke.

The Grootvlei mine now stands in ruins. What could not be stolen and sold for scrap is cut up and sold to Chinese state-owned mining company Shandong Gold. The white foreman at Aurora can only watch as the looting of the mine continues This is the same ANC who wants to nationalize the mines, the banks and the farms. Can you even imagine the utter enslavement of blacks, the dilapidation and ruin of South Africa that will follow? As the rivers of gold and other critical minerals that once flowed from South Africa dries up one after the other due to BEE and nationalisation, the world and especially the Oppenheimer’s will look back to the good old days when the whites were in charge of South Africa and they were making their fortunes. The day will still come that they will realize that they might have betted on the wrong horse.

Genocide of the Boers in South Africa

“Nothing reaches far and wide like murmurings of Genocide. Yet nothing else sounds more bizarre when hearing it from lands afar. Ignorance is bliss they say so I am wiping it away. You cannot claim you didn’t know or try to say it isn’t so…”

In less than 10 years, thousands of Rhino have been slaughtered for their horns! This is a travesty! Even more so as there is no scientific proof that Rhino horn has any medicinal property what so ever. Yet some claim that is a powerful aphrodisiac and one man claims it can cure cancer. There is absolutely NO truth to these claims, but still these majestic animals are on the brink of extinction!
In 2012 alone 381 rhino have paid the ultimate price for these ridiculous claims! Most of the rhino are killed in, of all places, the Kruger National Park! …one of South Africa’s main tourist attractions and supposedly a safe environment for our much treasured Wild Life.

Most of the rhino horn is sold on the Black market in Asia! Our Government stockpiles the horns that are confiscated by the police, but there is no clarity as to how much they have or what is to be done with it. We seem to be unable to get this problem under control and the more effort that is put into stopping this, the more popular these horns become!

There is a huge outcry, locally and internationally to DO something about this inhumane slaughtering of our rhino and our Government has given heed to this, BECAUSE the world is getting involved! We thank you for this!Referring to people or groups op people as “Us” and “Them”, according to race, ethnicity, religion or nationality.Giving names or symbols to the classifications – in our case referring to us as “Boers” or “Whiteys”.

Classification and symbolization are universally human and do not necessarily result in genocide, unless they leadto the next stage, dehumanization. One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects or diseases.

Dehumanization overcomes the normal human revulsion against murder.

Genocide is always organized, usually by the state, though sometimes informally or by terrorist groups.

Special army units or militias are often trained and armed. Plans are made for genocidal killings.Extremists drive the groups apart. Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda. Laws are passed with racial criteria that further oppresses the already marginalized group…South Africa is currently the only country in the WORLD that has laws in place to “Protect” a 60 Million Majority against a 4.5 Million Minority!

The most obvious ones being:
*Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) – This law forces businesses with a certain turnover P/A to give 35% of their shares to a Black Business Partner. Businesses are audited and prosecuted if they are not BEE compliant. Since capability and skills have left the Government sector at the time when the white employees who were dismissed,  the Government had to contract consultants to fulfill the duties of those qualified and competent white people who were dismissed. Once more, the Government is now compelled by law to only award ALL Government contracts to those private companies who are in possession of a BEE-certificate. This certificate is issued by the Government on completion of a thorough investigation by the Government to confirm that a private company has sufficient Black shareholders and employees ON ALL levels of their work force.
*Quota System – All Sport Unions are forced to apply a quota system when choosing players for Provincial and National teams and the percentages have to again be representative of the population, thus leaving capable sportsmen and –women with no way to participate unless they are black. In practice, this means that sportsmen and –woman are elected to represent their province/country on the basis of the colour of their skin and not on merit at all.
Section 9: The right to equality before the law and freedom from discrimination. Prohibited grounds of discrimination include race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity. Death lists are drawn up. Members of victim groups are forced to wear identifying symbols. They are often segregated into ghettoes, forced into concentration camps, or confined to a famine-struck region and starved.Extermination begins, and quickly becomes the mass killing legally called “genocide.” It is “extermination” to the killers, because they do not believe their victims to be fully human. When it is sponsored by the state, the armed forces often work with militias to execute the killing.Denial is the eighth stage that always follows genocide. It is among the surest indicators of further genocidal massacres. The perpetrators of genocide dig up the mass graves, burn the bodies, try to cover up the evidence and intimidate the witnesses. They deny that they committed any crimes, and often blame what happened on the victims. They block investigations of the crimes, and continue to govern until driven from power by force, when they flee into exile.Like murmurings of GenocideYet nothing else sounds more bizarreThan hearing it from lands afarSo I am wiping it awayYou cannot claim you didn’t knowOr try to say it isn’t so…

I am, however writing this piece to BEG people from all over the world to give the same kind of attention, if not more, to another, even more horrific and pressing disaster facing South Africa! I refuse to believe that we live in a world where HUMAN life is less valued than that of animals and yet, it seems to be the case when it comes to getting the world to sit up and take notice of the fact that the WHITE BOER PEOPLE of South Africa are literally ALSO on the brink of extinction!
More than 4 000 White Farmers (Boers) have been murdered in Brutal Farm Attacks and that number increases daily and thousands more “Boers” are being murdered in our Cities for no apparent reason other than that they are WHITE!
Please, do not think for even a second, that I am exaggerating! Here are the FACTS!
In 1991 there were 5.6 Million Whites in South Africa. Today we are less than 4.3 Million! …and of the 100 000 commercial farmers in South Africa, only 29 000 are left!
We have been placed on level 6 of a possible 8, by Genocide Watch, an International organization that monitors, not only the number of people that are being brutally murdered in Race driven killings, but the political and socio-economic environment in which these people find themselves. These first 6 stages are…
1. CLASSIFICATION
We (the European people) are referred to by the black population of South Africa, by several names that include “Boer”, “Whitey”, “iBhunu”, etc.
2. SYMBOLIZATION
…which, in our case, it has! Songs are sung about “Killing the Boer”. A particular song called “Dubula iBhunu”, meaning “Kill/shoot the Boer”, is even sung by our current State President at huge public gatherings to the great pleasure of thousands of his followers, despite our Supreme Court ruling that this song constitutes Hate Speech! You can find proof of this by viewing the following link …

3. DEHUMANIZATION
When faced with what is being done to our people, this revulsion clearly doesn’t exist anymore! Babies are being shot at point blank range! Elderly women are being raped and tortured by burning them with clothing irons and shoving anything from broomsticks to smashed bottles into their vaginas! People are being hacked to death with pangas, their heads smashed with bricks and stones, their throats slit with blunt knives… There is NO end to the horrendous brutality with which my people are being murdered!!! If you doubt this, simply type the words “Boer Genocide” in Google!!
4. ORGANIZATION
In South Africa, the Government is simply turning a blind eye to this and calling it “Normal Crime” at worst! These murders are by no means random nor are they disorganized! The killers/murderers always work in groups – mostly 4-5 . They steal very little and what they do take is considered “loot” or “reward” for a job well done. In many cases they arrive on foot and steal a vehicle as a means of getting away. These vehicles are then simply discarded along the way and often burnt. The process of “organizing” a complete WIPEOUT of the Boer people was very well thought through.
*Firstly the South African Government ordered that firearm owners should surrender all their firearms though a hugely unconstitutional and completely illegal campaign. Most of the law abiding citizens complied for fear of prosecution. These weapons were to be destroyed, but there is NO evidence of this ever having been done. To make matters worse, over 20 000 weapons have gone “missing” from the Police Force’s arsenal, with no reports as to what happened to these guns and in addition nobody was ever prosecuted for negligence regarding the disappearance of these firearms!
*Secondly, all the Commandos (volunteers with army training operating under strict governance of our Defense Force) that used to keep our farming communities safe, were disbanded by our current Government, thus leaving our Farmers defenseless against these attacks.  Despite promises from the Government that police officials and Defense Force units will replace the Commandos, nothing has transpired ever since!
*Thirdly, much is being made by the SA Government of “redistributing” farmland. They have created the impression that most of our arid land is still in the hands of the “Boers” and that they are bluntly refusing to sell land to the Government who will in turn distribute this land to Black people to farm on. This is a lie, as most of the land in South Africa already belongs to the Government and up till now, no audit has been done to establish how much agricultural land is owned by the black people and how much land is being registered in the names of Foreign owners. Some of these farms previously developed by white farmers, have been given to Black communities to farm on, but without significant success. These farms have become barren, costing thousands of people their jobs and livelihood and seriously threatening our food supply in SA.  All of these factors are creating an environment where the hatred for the Boer is being aggravated and these farmers are considered the enemy of the “People” …and our leaders then singing songs about killing or shooting  the “Boer”,  is certainly NOT helping!
5. POLARIZATION
…in this case the White Boer People!
*Affirmative Action (AA) – in terms of which businesses are forced to employ workers in accordance to the percentage of the population in the country – thus meaning that 92% of the work force HAS to be black whether they have the necessary qualifications or not!
***All of this whilst our Highly Praised Constitution states VERY clearly that:
Polarizing Propaganda is openly preached from public stages at political gatherings and white people are being called “Thieves and Murderers” to the delight of cheering crowds. Due to large scale corruption, the current Government is hardly able to deliver any of the promised services to the poorest of the poor, but instead of owning up to the fact that BILLIONS are lost or stolen from our annual budget, white people are simply blamed for the horrendous conditions in which more than 25% of the population is currently living. This is furthering the utter hatred behind the Genocide of the “Boer people”!

6. PREPARATION
We have now entered this phase in South Africa. We need not wear symbols as we are identified simply because we are White! In less than 10 years, more than 600 000 White people have ended up in Squatter Camps (ghettos) mostly because they have been forced to resign due to the Affirmative Action Legislation (i.e. due to the colour of their skin). These people live in horrifying circumstances with absolutely NO hope of receiving any help from the Government to acquire shelter and food!
There are only 2 levels left before my people, the ones that are left, will literally have to “run for their lives”! More than 1 Million White South Africans have left the country already – some after experiencing crime first hand. Some because their very own family members have been murdered and some to find employment in countries where their skin colour will NOT be a disqualification.
7. EXTERMINATION
The frightening truth is that, although this is seen as the second last level of Genocide and we have NOT been placed here yet, we are already experiencing a level of extermination that the world simply seems to ignore bluntly! In 1994 there were 133 000 commercial farmers in South Africa. Today, there are only 33 000. More than 4 000 of these farmers have been murdered!!! Many of our farmers sold their land out of fear of these attacks and many more have been forced to sell their land to the Government for their “Land Redistribution” plan.
Our Farmers are not the only targets though! Thousands of our Boer people are murdered in Cities and Towns. More often than not, the elderly are the victims of these Hate-crimes and the brutality, with which these people are being killed, is utterly shocking! You can read the following link regarding some of the more recent incidents…

8. DENIAL
Although we have not reached this stage, our Government is already denying the fact that the Boer Nation is being targeted in these brutal killings ant they prefer to refer to these brutal killings as “Normal Crime” – part of our everyday lives in South Africa. You can read this claim here…
After reading all of this, I can only hope that you will realize that we are in dire need of your help to avoid more barbaric murders, eliminating our numbers to a point where resistance is not possible any longer! If you choose to turn a blind eye and NOT concern yourself with this utter human travesty, it will be a sad day indeed…
Please forward this article to as many people as you possibly can! Make sure that you bring our plight under the attention of your political organizations, politicians and Governments! To us it is a matter of life and death.
My People are dying EVERY DAY, due to these senseless murders! YOU can help to put an end to this!
Nothing reaches far and wide
Ignorance is bliss they say

South African president Zuma reveals he used to practice witchcraft against white people

  • Jacob Zuma told crowd in his native Zulu language at a pre-election rally Zuma spoke in village of KaNyamazane in Mpumalanga province..  Reportedly said he used to 'bewitch the Boers during apartheid'
South Africa's president Jacob Zuma has told how he used to practice witchcraft against white people.
Speaking in his native Zulu language at a pre-election rally in the country's rural north, he told a crowd of his voodoo past.
'I used to practice witchcraft around here, bewitching the Boers during apartheid', Zuma reportedly said.

President Zuma spoke in the village of KaNyamazane, in South Africa's Mpumalanga province on Wednesday.
He promised the crowd that if his African National Congress (ANC) party was re-elected into power with over 90 per cent of the popular vote, he would come back to the village to slaughter cows in celebration.
'When the elections are over, I'm coming again. If you give us 90 per cent upwards during the elections, we are coming here to slaughter cows. Less than 90 per cent, I don't come.'

Zuma also told the crowd that the ANC would continue to run South Africa 'for ever'.
'We will continue to run this government forever and ever. Whether they (detractors) like it or not!' Zuma said.
Although South Africa's ANC government is predicted to win this year's election with around 60 per cent of the vote, it is forecast to lose a great deal of popular support.
The past five years have seen widespread economic strife in South Africa.
The former liberation party has also been embroiled in a series of highly damaging corruption scandals.
President Zuma is also widely perceived has having personally profited from his presidency by building a lavish £10 million homestead with what is alleged to be taxpayers' money.
Jacob Zuma played a significant role in the ANC's struggle against apartheid, working as a commander of the movement's armed wing, the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK).
As part of his underground work for the MK, he travelled incognito around South Africa, helping plot military exercises against apartheid targets.
Many South African political commentators have expressed fears that Zuma's and the ANC's growing unpopularity may see him and the party try to play on South Africans' racial fears to win support.

Blaming whites not the way forward - Cape Argus - By Max du Preez

White South Africans will have to develop very thick skins in the run-up to the May elections – well, not too thick, because they also need to get the message.
Probably more than during any election campaign since 1994, the trend among several political groupings has been to darkly warn white South Africa about the consequences of continued inequality, poverty and unemployment. Some of these politicians seem to believe that the best way to demonstrate their revolutionary fervour and commitment to a better life for all is to insult and threaten the white minority.
Some otherwise sober-minded commentators have joined the chorus in recent weeks, although with a softer approach.
When do the whites start making a contribution to alleviate the plight of the black poor? Why do the whites who confess their love for Nelson Mandela not also love other black people? Whites need to show their gratitude for a peaceful settlement and the subsequent prosperity by resolving the land issue. And so on.
HONEYMOON IS OVER?
There’s nothing subtle about statements from the Economic Freedom Fighters and the group forming around Numsa: whiteys, your honeymoon is over, we’re coming for your wealth. And they underline these threats by elevating Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe to the Great African Liberator.
There is no way one can minimise the historic burden white South Africans have after the centuries of colonialism and decades of apartheid. No white citizen can deny that whites as a group have benefited greatly at the expense of the black majority and still own a disproportionate slice of the economy and occupy more key positions than their numbers would suggest.
It is also true that far too many whites continue to live as if 1994 had never happened. Far too many do not in fact appreciate that they’re much better off after 1994 while so many black South Africans still sit in squalid townships, squatter camps or impoverished rural areas.
SOME PERSPECTIVE
But the point of this column is to bring some perspective, to show that simply insulting and threatening whites as a group 20 years after we became a democracy is not very productive and can be disempowering. We have to find solutions to our problems, and quickly.
I think it is safe to assume that if it hadn’t been for the deep inequalities in our society, this trend to again make white South Africans the common enemy of all black South Africans would not have been possible. Inequality in society is, however, a worldwide phenomenon and most countries struggle to counter it without destroying economic growth.
Look at these figures: the richest 2 percent of the world own more wealth than the rest of the living souls on the planet; the bottom 80 percent of the world’s population own just 6 percent of the wealth while the richest 1 percent own 43 percent. Even more staggering: the richest 300 people in the world own as much wealth as the poorest 3 billion. I do not know if it has been calculated, but I suspect that the richest 500 people in South Africa own more than many millions of the poor; that the top 10 percent own more wealth than the bottom 50 percent. Sure, most of that top 10 percent are probably white and close to all the bottom 50 percent are black.
NOT ALL WHITES ARE RICH
But the way to change this would be the same if they were all the same colour. There seems to be a popular perception among black South Africans that all whites are rich. But if one takes the wealth of the white super-rich, the top 10 percent, out of the equation, the picture looks very different. And then consider the fact that several hundred thousand whites live in abject poverty in virtual squatter camps.
Blaming whites for being well off won’t solve the problem. Blaming white farmers for owning land won’t lead to fairer redistribution. The black Durban couple who bought each other R17 million worth of Rolls-Royces for Christmas aren’t less vulgar than a white industrialist’s R17m yacht.
We will have to devise radical ways of bringing about a fairer, more equal society without harming our economy to such an extent that all would be poorer afterwards. Our elected government should drive and implement this process. Simply blaming one sector of society for our ills emasculates us all. Fixing our education system and eradicating corruption, unproductivity and wastage of public money would be a good start, but won’t be enough in itself.
Big business and the wealthy top echelons, white and black, should join in this quest for a fair society rather than fight it. They have the most to lose if we descend into instability.

Population of the Boer Nation - The Future of the Boer

The Boer population is estimated at around 1.5 million out of a total White Afrikaans or Afrikaner population of about 3.5 million. The fact that the Boer population is the smaller segment of the White Afrikaans population demonstrates that the Boers are marginalized under any umbrella macro designation [ like Afrikaner ] referring to White Afrikaans speakers in general & as such any attempts the actual Boer people make from time to time to find self determination is often erroneously even maliciously labeled as an "extremist" segment of a non existent monolithic population which was a technique started with the Maritz Rebellion of 1914 [ ie: it was a Boer movement not an Afrikaner one ] & continued up to the present. Just imagine the obvious absurdity of asserting that Canadians are "extremist" for exercising [ or even seeking to pursue ] self determination outside of the context of the bulk of the North American population.

By Jan Stürmann
In a hot tin-roofed workshop, four young men, stripped to the waist, build coffins. With well practiced efficiently, they produce 100 caskets a month, participants in a program to create work for unemployed Afrikaners. Most are sold to bury AIDS victims in the black communities surrounding the all-white private town of Orania.
This town of 600, situated close to the geographic center of South Africa, was established in 1991, as a place where the soon-to-be outvoted Afrikaners, could rebuild a homeland or Boer volkstaat. Thirteen years on, despite bad press and the brunt of endless editorial cartoons, the town has endured.
Earlier in the week, I met with prominent Boer nationalist Danie Theron in the South African capital Pretoria. I had contacted Danie curious to find out how the Boer were faring, ten years after apartheid had ended.
Theron immediately took the opportunity to stress differences between Boer and Afrikaner, two words, which are often used interchangeably. In the world-view of the Boer, they alone made the Great Trek from the Cape in the 1830’s to establish independent Boer republics inland, whilst the Afrikaners stayed with the British and got rich. Then the Afrikaners supported the British; the Boer fought them during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899. And in 1994, the Afrikaner leaders betrayed the Boer by giving their land to black South Africans. Theron explained the Boer are deeply, conservatively religious and to survive, believe they need self-determination on land they can call their own.

In a country of 45 million, the Boer, with a total population of fewer than 1.5 million, are politically insignificant. They gambled on apartheid and lost. Now they live, a distinct nation, within a country not their own. Many Boer are again circling the wagon. The slogan for the Boer-run Radio Pretoria is “The radio with borders.”
The Boers hope that private all white towns like Orania, or Kleinfontein, 30 km east of Pretoria, will serve as seed-crystals for a future homeland. Today, 300 residents live in Kleinfontein. Residents do all their own work, run their own schools, and take care of the old and the poor. Impressive, permanent homes spread across the grassy hills. But when asked how long it will take to grow into a homeland, town board member Jan Groenewald admits “not in my lifetime.”
Since the end of apartheid, many Afrikaners have fallen on hard times. On the edge of some towns, squatter camps of homeless Afrikaners spread like Okie camps in 1930’s California. To help poor Boer, retired businessman Willie Venter started VolksHulp 2000, a charity organization whose objective is vaguely similar to that of the Salvation Army. It's one of the many social, political and labor organizations sprouting up in recent years to further the Boer agenda.
Theron covers a blackboard with a spider web of affiliations, pyramids of social structures, and pie charts of power bases, describing how these organizations will help the Boer unite and organize their future.
“The Boer are a stubborn, independent, fractious people. It is in our genes. For their contrariness, our ancestors were kicked out of Holland, France and Germany. To get a majority of Boer to unite behind the Volkstaat, will take a lot of work. But we have no alternative. If we don’t pull together, we will simply not survive.”
The next day we make the three-hour drive southeast of Pretoria, to the Hill of Majuba, where on February 27, 1881, the Boer won a decisive battle against the British who, after gold was discovered, had tried to annex the Boer Republic of Transvaal. A week later, the British negotiated peace.
Since 1991, the Boer, return annually to this battle site by the thousands. Some come by horse. A village of tents and campers spread across the foot of Majuba, which rises steeply up from the surrounding grasslands. Pickup trucks share the dusty lot with expensive German sedans. An array of different flags hang off trees, tents, and poles.
Families and old friends talk around campfires; children play between tents; and open fields and teenagers court. Women in long colorful period dresses and stiff sunbonnets mingle with those wearing khaki shirts and wide bush hats, dark from years of accumulating sweat. Large pistols share belt space with cell phones. A group practices whip cracking. Crowds cheer as teams of large, grunting men compete at tug-of-war.
Those who can, make the pilgrimage to the top of Majuba. In air thinner than my coast-bound lungs are used to, I huff up the steep path. At the summit, a group of eight Pretoria University students sit with a large, fluttering flag. They discuss the 123-year old battle—attack tactics, weapons used, numbers killed -- as if each has lived it.
“This flag,” Ebert Myburgh, 21, explains, “is one we created by combining the old Boer Republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State flags. “There are too many flags. What’s needed is one under which all Boers can unite. We hope this will be the one.”
These ordinary university students -- joking, holding hands, trying to outsmart each other -- then circle the summit like pilgrims. I talk with a young man named Andries van der Berg, walking barefoot over the stones and grass. He is studying theater and TV production and wants to use his skills to help further the Boer culture. Already he’s produced two CD’s of Volk songs. “It’s in my blood,” he says. “My great-grandfather was former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd”
They plant their flag on top of a beacon, link arms in a circle, and sing about their history and people and dreams. A young woman sings a solo, her voice clear and strong and haunting. I walk away, an outsider, witnessing something too private.
Later that afternoon, under an eucalyptus tree alight with the setting sun, five young men tend to their horses. One measures grain into feedbags; another rubs ointment on cracked hooves; the third fixes a broken bridle. Chores done, they sit amongst their feeding horses and talk.

They are part of a commando of forty-five who rode in from Pretoria, a two-day hard trek. Most make their living off the land, tend cattle, grow corn. Pride in their toughness, their horsemanship, their culture, clings to their skin like two days of sweat and grime.
They are shy and awkward around me. Pieter Grobler does most of the talking; he’s a little older, with a full beard and a body like a bear.
I accidentally refer to them as Afrikaners. “We’re Boer,” he corrects, “not Afrikaners.”

I ask Pieter what will be the plight of the Boer in South Africa. He pauses momentarily, “Exactly what happened to the farmers in Zimbabwe. The government will squander the countries wealth, which the Boer created. As they run out of money, they will confiscate our farms to give to their cronies; already this is happening. But we will unite and resist. For me to let them take our land is to stab my ancestors in the back. I will fight and make my forefathers proud. The Boer will survive.”
I ask him if he thinks black South Africans have a right to this land.
“Of course they do. All I want is for them not to mess with me, and I won’t mess with them. They must leave us alone; let us practice our own culture. But the Boer and the blacks are like oil and water: we just can’t mix.”
The day before, in Pretoria, I attended a meeting of the Boer think tank Studiegroep vir Eietydse Geskiedenis (Study Group for Current History). Once a month at an upscale restaurant downtown, this group of mostly elderly men, meet in a private room adorned with scantly clad Greek and Roman goddesses. They sat at white-linened tables, sipped wine, and listened to guest speaker Christo Burger talk about the threat of Islam, the biased media, the Antichrist, and God’s special plan for the Boer nation. His business card describes him as President of the CIA (Christian Intelligence Agency), “Spreading Absolute Truth.”
They asked ponderous questions, heard only what confirms their worldview. Like old lions they sat, growling into their wine glasses, their teeth worn down to stubs, hair gray and falling out. If evoked, their roar will still freeze blood, but most have lost the will to fight. They are disappointed and bitter and dazed. “Adapt or die” the old saying goes. In 1994, when the black South Africans gained power, these men were too old to adapt, too young to die. Now they are old; soon they will die, and be remembered for the mistakes of their past.
It is the young Boers who will lead the Volk forward. The ones who carry new flags up mountains, who live their history, learn the songs and sing them spontaneously on former battlefields. They are too young to be burdened by the guilt of apartheid. They embrace riding in commandoes and the Internet. They live the old traditions and adapt new ones. They can imagine a Boer future and are willing to fight for it.
I spend the night sleeping under an old ox-wagon, as Orion performs a slow back-flip over Majuba. The Boers sing and talk around a bonfire until 3 am.
Early the next morning I hitch a seven-hour ride to Bloemfontein. I rent a room in this small city in the Orange Free State, which was once a Boer Republic capital, and is still South Africa’s judicial capital.
In the evening I walk through downtown, a rare white face in a city turned African. Professional black families sit on balconies to catch the evening breeze. Young men rev hotrods at traffic lights. A large sandstone church, once filled with Afrikaners worshiping their white God, is packed with a well-dressed congregation of blacks singing foot-tapping gospels. The few whites, who had to venture downtown from their walled suburban homes, sit hunched behind steering wheels with the doors locked. Foreigners in their former capital, they pass like cloud-shadows across the land.
At an Orania guesthouse the next day, I meet a retired couple from Nelspruit. They sit on the front porch, sip tea, and watch the sun set. She, with hair shaped into a black helmet and eyes magnified behind thick glass, tells me: “Our children think we are mad coming here, but we have to find a safe place to live. The crime in Nelspruit is terrible, and getting worse. Four times they broke into our home. We have to chain our car to a tree so it won’t get dragged away. I can’t sleep anymore. The smallest noise, and I wake up; have to go check. Our friends have been killed; women we know raped...” Her voice grows with hysteria; eyes wide with remembered fear. “It’s just terrible, terrible. Always locking doors, locking windows. We’re like prisoners in our own home. No one should have to live like this. I’m going mad, quite simply mad with fear.” Her husband tries to calm her. She takes a deep breath and strokes nonexistent wrinkles on her dress.
In an Orania packing shed, young Afrikaners with enviable tans and sun-bleached hair, pack melons for export to Europe. They wear the unofficial uniform of South African farm laborers everywhere - black rubber boots, blue overalls and threadbare tee shirts. They came from towns like Newcastle and Kimberly where work, particularly for Afrikaans males is scarce. Ten years of the New South Africa has pushed these young men to the bottom of the food chain. Undereducated, white and often racist, their only hope lies in finding manual work at a place like Orania. So for $9/day they work where no blacks may; wielding shovels, swinging pick, harvesting melons, pruning 20,000 pecan trees.
They hate it here, but it's a living. The town folk, 51% of whom are university graduates, look down on them. Young women are scare, and extramarital sex is forbidden anyway. They can’t get drunk, can’t play their music too loud. The bright spot for many of them is the racial isolation. The bigotry is blatant, not hidden behind a veil of intellectual contortions: “A kaffir (disparaging term for a Black person) is a kaffir,” says Tiene Martines, 17. “He just stinks.”

In big vats of molasses, children at the Volk School Orania, cultivate microorganisms.
This school, with a graduation rate of 100%, is regarded as a model of progressive education. A self-directed, computer-based learning system called KenWeb, was developed here, and is exported to home-schoolers around the world.
Anna Boshoff, daughter of apartheid-era Prime Minister H.R. Verwoerd, is the principle of the school. The children treat her like a grandmother. One of her sons, Wynand Boshoff, is head teacher. A guest speaker demonstrates an earth building technique. Wynand takes off shoes and mixes mud with the students.
Mrs. Boshoff explains how Effective Microorganisms, or EM, works: “ 80% of microorganisms have little known benefit, 10% are harmful, and 10% are vital to maintain an ecological balance. Conventional farming practices have upset this balance. Through a company in Japan we buy EM spores, which we cultivated in vats of molasses. The EM-rich liquid is then sold to local farmers. They feed it to their cattle, spray it on their crops, put it in the water. In time, animals get healthier, crops stronger, and balance is again restored to the land.”
Maybe Orania is itself a big vat of molasses for the Boer people. A place in the semi-desert where they can preserve their own culture, and cultivate that which they require to survive.

THE BRITISH ROOTS OF THE AFRIKANER DESIGNATION

The term Afrikaner - as anyone studying its roots knows - is a political term that was first used to describe a political abstraction within a political context during the late 19th cent & was initiated by a Cape organization composed of Cape Dutch intellectuals & two individuals from Holland. As such, this term was significantly influenced by the British colonial power. The following are some quotes further outlining this fact.
Quote: [ Another point of grotesque confusion that we need to clear up, is that Boers are not "Afrikaners". None of your co-workers seem to have any understanding of this. All Boers are aware of the systematic subterfuge and distortion of "identity" that has been the result of the makings of the Broederbond and the National Party, based upon the then image of the British imperialist gentleman. This artificial identity was meant to wean away the Boers from their strong identity, from their history, from their nationalism, and thus weaken them. ]

Quote: [ As a point of departure it should be stated that Cape Afrikaners, upon encountering British occupation, possessed only a rudimentary collective consciousness. The process of collective consciousness formation among them took place largely, as we have seen, under the aegis of British rule. Generations of Afrikaners had been born as British subjects before this process matured in the 1870s in ethnic political mobilization. British colonial experience, with all its contradictory ramifications, left a deep impression on their evolving collective consciousness. The manifestations of loyalty by the Afrikaner Bond serve as clear evidence thereof. It may sound somewhat speculative, but the admiration and love for the Queen may suggest that she played a role in the formation of Cape Afrikaner group identity and consciousness. They seem to have adopted Queen Victoria as a collective mother figure. Praising and congratulating the Queen on her birthday in 1890, the Z A suggested that if a president were to replace the Queen, the centrifugal forces in the Cape would increase. Cape Afrikaners seemed to have internalized their imperial monarchical experience. Beyond that, it was the balance of their colonial experience which influenced their disposition. ]

Quote: [ THE "AFRIKANERS"

7.1 Thus at the time of the ending of the Second Anglo Boer War, there were three distinct ethnic groupings amongst the broad White population of South Africa:

(i) the internationally recognized and indigenous Boer people;
(ii) the Cape Dutch Settlers, loyal to the British Empire; and
(iii) the English speaking White settlers, also loyal to the British Empire.

7.2 The British Empire realized that it had to bring the Boers under control for once and for all, and therefore devised a plan to neutralize the Boer Republics - a plan to make them join up with the other two White segments of their colonies in South Africa.

7.3 The British masters of Southern Africa therefore engineered the National Convention of 1908, which saw the creation of the Union of South Africa. This union consisted of the former Cape Colony, the Natal Colony, and the two former Boer Republics. This union was not merely a geographic convenience, but a deliberate plan to try and destroy the independence minded Boers by mingling them with the Cape Dutch & English settlers.

7.4 It is worth noting that the British Empire used their technique in other parts of Africa as well -reference can be made to the short lived federation of Nyasaland (Malawi); Northern Rhodesia (Zambia); and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to name but one.

7.5 The prime representative of the British Empire in South Africa, Sir Alfred Milner, put it this way: "The new tactic (to subjugate the Boers) must be to consolidate the different areas of British South Africa into one nation. Although unification will be initially put the Boers into political control of the entire South Africa, it will, ironically, eventually lead to their final downfall."

7.6 This was of course precisely what happened - but not until a new name had been developed for the new "nation" which Milner spoke about. They could not continue to call the new nation a "Boer" state, because the Boers had been subjugated. They could not call it a "Cape Dutch" state, as the Dutch colonialists were now British colonialists, and they could not call it a British state, for obvious reasons. The answer then was to give a general term to all White inhabitants of the new union - "Afrikaners". Although the word originally meant "African" it was politicized by a group of Cape Dutch propagandists under one SJ du Toit in 1880 (the same year the Boers took up arms to fight the British colonialists) in literature of the time. It was then decided to try and blend the Boers into the Cape Dutch and English speaking White populations but calling them all Afrikaners instead of referring to their real ethnic bases.

7.7 This then is how the world began to hear of "Afrikaners" - although only 80 years ago there was no such word in the international vocabulary.

7.8 By forcing the Boers into the Union of South Africa, the British made them co- responsible for the policy of racial segregation, which had of course been established and legislated by the British colonial government.

7.9 The new "Afrikaners" - in fact a coalition of Cape Dutch, English speaking Whites and some Boers - tried as best they could to come to grips with the racial and geographic legacy left to them from the British colonial times - and it was from this disaster that the policy of Apartheid was developed.

7.10 It is of supreme importance to note here that the Boers were dragged unwillingly into the Union of South Africa - and at the first opportunity which presented itself they tried to extricate themselves by force of arms. This was the unsuccessful 1914 Boer rebellion, which ended when some Boer war era generals were killed or imprisoned by the pro-British Union of South Africa government.

7.11 It is thus unfair of the international world to regard the "Boers" as having been responsible for what happened in South Africa during the second part of the 20th century - the Boers were just as much victims of the colonial powers as were any other indigenous people of Africa. ] Source: [ http://www.arthurkemp.com/whoaretheboers.htm ]
